Bruins picked Defenseman Ryan Button in the 3rd round (#82 overall). Button played in the WHL for the Prince Albert Raiders.

Bruins select defenseman Ryan Button with third-round pick
By Alex Katz

The Bruins seem to have made up for their lack of a second-round pick with their selection of Ryan Button in the third round. With the 86th overall pick, the Bruins took the 18-year-old defenseman from Edmonton.

Many expected Button to go in the second round, but of course anything can happen in the draft. The 6-foot, 185-pound lefty enjoyed a successful 2008-09 season for the Western Hockey League’s Prince Albert Raiders. In 70 games, Button recorded five goals and 32 assists, leading the team’s defensemen in the latter.

Button has excellent mobility and skating skills. Scouts and coaches say they like Button’s leadership qualities and the effort he consistently exerts. According to one scouting blogger, Button only threw down his gloves three times last year, but in each instance he was defending a teammate.

The NHL scouting report said the following about Button:

“Button skates and plays the game with so much composure for a young player. His passes and movement around the rink are excellent. He uses his defensive partner well and he’s a team player that can buy time and space with his smarts for the game.”

Here’s a few personality tidbits on Caron’s (I think he means Button) likes, dislikes and favorite things courtesy of his prospect page at NHL.com:

lol I don't get it, is there really a John Tavares soccer player or something? Even still... Sometimes I really understand the sports demographic in the US. Sometimes I just want to throw up my hands and move to Canada lol

Every google result has to do with americans thinking he is a soccer player lol. http://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=john+tavares+soccer&aq=f&oq=&aqi=&fp=OzgK0dwM7rU

And who the heck is Ricky Rubio? 3 states voted for him. Well his agent which is worse.

lol I really dont understand. I know that I'm way more into hockey than the avg US citizen, but I've been reading about this kid for like 2-3 years now! And post draft people don't know who he is? I'm baffled. If I didn't know the top pick in basketball or football people would call me an idiot lol I'm sure it doesn't help that ESPN sucks and is inhabited by stupid readers lol

I went to school with John Tavares' older brother and a few of his cousins...John went to my high school actually (long after I graduated of course). I saw him play once for our STA Raiders hockey team, but my brother kinda knew him from parties. Funny how small the world is some times...Steve Mason came from Oakville as well, not sure what high school he went to, though I know my brother knows - he's in Denmark now, so I'll have to ask him the next time I hear from him.

There's been a recent influx of 'Islanders' gear around town this week...hats, shirts, that I've seen around Oakville
